‘I Stopped a War’: Trump’s Shocking India-Pakistan Claim at UNGA

by admin477351

On the world’s most significant diplomatic stage, the United Nations General Assembly, US President Donald Trump made the extraordinary claim that he personally prevented a war between India and Pakistan. This assertion, which he has made repeatedly in other forums, was presented as a key foreign policy achievement for which he believes he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

According to Trump, his intervention was one of seven instances where he successfully averted major global conflicts. This narrative, however, clashes directly with India’s official account of the events. New Delhi has maintained that its decision to halt a military campaign, internally known as Operation Sindoor, came at Pakistan’s request and was a sovereign decision, not one dictated by Washington. Trump’s choice to air this disputed claim at the UNGA has been viewed as an apparent attack on India’s strategic autonomy.

This was not the only instance of Trump targeting India during his speech. In a far more aggressive turn, he accused India and China of being the principal financial backers of Russia’s war in Ukraine. He argued that their continued purchase of discounted Russian crude oil was directly fueling the conflict, a statement that stunned many diplomats given the recent warming of ties between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The President’s words carry the weight of recent punitive actions. His administration has already imposed a 50% overall tariff on Indian imports, with the latest 25% hike specifically targeting the oil issue. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that India’s Russian oil purchases remain a primary point of contention and that further sanctions are under consideration to choke off Moscow’s revenues.

The dual attacks—one on India’s diplomatic history and the other on its current economic policy—have left New Delhi in a precarious situation. The Modi government’s strategy of quiet diplomacy and avoiding public spats with the famously unpredictable US President is now being severely tested. The speech has underscored the volatile nature of the relationship, where personal bonhomie can be swiftly replaced by public censure.
