“Conspiracy to Monopolize”: Musk’s xAI Takes on Apple and OpenAI

by admin477351

Elon Musk is escalating his fight against OpenAI, launching a lawsuit through his xAI startup that also targets Apple for its deep integration of ChatGPT. Filed in Texas, the complaint alleges a calculated “conspiracy to monopolize” key technology markets, arguing that the two companies have joined forces to illegally stifle competition from emerging AI players.

The lawsuit challenges the very foundation of the partnership announced last year, where Apple agreed to weave OpenAI’s capabilities into its software. Musk’s legal team argues this agreement effectively “locked up markets,” giving ChatGPT an unfair advantage and preventing other AI models, such as xAI’s Grok, from gaining a foothold. This legal gambit seeks not only billions in financial compensation but also the dissolution of the landmark deal.

The feud traces back to the early days of OpenAI, which Musk co-founded with CEO Sam Altman. After a failed attempt to take over the company, Musk left in 2018 and has since become one of its fiercest critics, particularly regarding its for-profit direction. This lawsuit is the culmination of years of public disputes, accusations, and litigious threats.

OpenAI has publicly pushed back against the allegations, characterizing the suit as another example of Musk’s personal campaign against them. An OpenAI spokesperson stated the filing fits an “ongoing pattern of harassment.” The outcome of this case could have profound implications for AI development, platform gatekeeping, and the bitter, high-stakes rivalry between two of Silicon Valley’s most influential figures.
