Nvidia Trades Chip Contracts for OpenAI Equity in Landmark $30 Billion Deal

by admin477351

In what represents a fundamental shift in how Nvidia thinks about its relationship with OpenAI, the chip giant is reportedly exchanging a chip-linked investment model for a clean equity stake worth $30 billion. The move is part of OpenAI’s next mega-round, expected to raise $100 billion and value the company at an extraordinary $730 billion.

The investment roster for the round reflects the extraordinary degree to which OpenAI has embedded itself in the strategic calculations of the world’s largest technology companies. Amazon, SoftBank, Microsoft, and now Nvidia are all expected to participate — each with their own reasons to maintain close financial ties to the company behind ChatGPT.

The previous Nvidia-OpenAI deal was a textbook example of what not to do in corporate investment. Announced last September, it tied Nvidia’s $100 billion commitment to OpenAI’s chip purchases — giving Nvidia a financial incentive to invest in a customer and creating a circular loop that benefited both companies’ public profiles without introducing genuine external capital. When the deal’s non-binding nature was confirmed earlier this month, its collapse was essentially inevitable.

OpenAI’s response was to publicly accelerate its hardware diversification. Deals with AMD and Broadcom confirmed that the company was no longer exclusively reliant on Nvidia’s GPUs, and that the previous arrangement had been built on a hardware dependency that was already being unwound. Nvidia’s decision to invest anyway — without demanding renewed chip exclusivity — suggests the chip maker has recalibrated its thinking about what makes this relationship valuable.

The financial realities facing OpenAI are formidable. ChatGPT’s market share has declined substantially, Anthropic is outperforming it in enterprise software, and cash burn continues. The company’s advertising experiment has drawn public attacks from Anthropic. Multiple investors are still hedging their public statements about the round. And Broadcom’s CEO has signaled limited near-term expectations from its OpenAI deal. Nvidia is investing in spite of these challenges — a significant act of confidence in OpenAI’s long-term future.
