At a high-level ministerial meeting held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Qatar has reiterated its support for a two-state solution as the cornerstone for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi, emphasized the necessity of adhering to international law and relevant United Nations resolutions to address the longstanding conflict.
During his speech, Al Khulaifi called for the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, defined by the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. He stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence between this prospective Palestinian state and Israel. Additionally, Al Khulaifi urged nations that have yet to recognize Palestine to take action in this regard.
The Qatari minister warned of the negative impact that continued settlement expansion, land seizures, and settler violence in the West Bank could have on the viability of a two-state solution. These actions, along with measures affecting the status of religious sites in the region, pose significant challenges to peace efforts, he noted.
Al Khulaifi also highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, exacerbated by ongoing conflicts, as a major obstacle to regional peace and political resolution. Qatar, along with Egypt, the United States, and Türkiye, has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts aimed at supporting ceasefire initiatives and fostering peace in the region.
Furthermore, Qatar has reiterated its commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, and supports international efforts to improve conditions on the ground. The nation remains dedicated to advancing a lasting political solution that not only addresses immediate humanitarian needs but also paves the way for enduring peace.
