Boost Sales: Extend Supermarket Basil Shelf Life with This Technique

Many people find themselves disheartened when a pot of basil purchased from the supermarket starts to wilt and die after just a few weeks. While poor care is often assumed to be the culprit, the root of the problem frequently lies in the plant’s condition before it even arrives at your home.

The basil typically found in stores is comprised of numerous young plants crammed into a single pot, which gives it a lush appearance. However, this overcrowding leads to the seedlings fiercely competing for essential resources like water, sunlight, and nutrients, ultimately compromising the plant’s overall health.

A practical solution to this issue is to separate the basil into smaller, more manageable groups before replanting. Start by gently removing the plant from its original pot, then carefully divide its roots into three or four sections, ensuring to keep as many roots intact as possible. Each section should be transferred into its own pot with fresh compost, watered thoroughly, and placed in a warm, bright area.

To encourage bushier growth and delay flowering, it’s advisable to regularly trim the tops of the basil. By providing more space for each plant to grow, the separated sections are more likely to thrive and continue producing fresh leaves.

An experiment with a single supermarket basil pot demonstrated encouraging outcomes. After dividing the plant into four sections, three of them continued to flourish, offering a steady supply of leaves over the course of the next month. By giving supermarket basil more room, it can transform from a short-lived kitchen herb into a longer-lasting source for cooking and gardening at home.
