During the recent 31st Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in Kingston, Jamaica, Qatar reiterated its support for the ISA and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Speaking on behalf of Qatar, Omar Ali Al Ali, who serves as the Secretary of the Standing Committee of the Convention on the Law of the Sea, highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between the responsible use of marine resources and the protection of the marine environment.

Al Ali emphasized the crucial need for increased dialogue and transparency within the ISA. He pointed out that credible scientific research and comprehensive environmental assessments are essential components to enhance decision-making processes. These measures, he suggested, would help ensure that the Authority’s activities align with environmental preservation objectives.

The meeting underscored Qatar’s commitment to collaborating with other member states to uphold the ISA’s role in managing seabed resources in international waters. Qatar aims to ensure these resources are governed in accordance with international law and utilized for the benefit of all humanity.

Qatar’s statements at the assembly reflect a broader commitment to the principles of sustainable development and international cooperation in marine resource management. The country’s advocacy for scientific research and environmental assessments highlights its focus on informed and responsible decision-making in the utilization of seabed resources.

Through its active participation, Qatar aims to contribute to the effective governance and sustainable management of the ocean’s vast resources, reinforcing its dedication to international maritime law and collective prosperity.
