The 89th Gulf Health Council meeting alongside the 12th GCC Health Ministers’ Committee meeting took place in Manama, Bahrain, on a recent Sunday, with Qatar actively participating in the discussions. Leading the Qatari delegation was the Minister of Public Health, Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud. The focus of these gatherings was to enhance cooperation across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries within the health sector.
During the sessions, officials examined the Gulf Health Council’s budgetary framework for the year 2027, as well as a series of proposed initiatives. They also delved into the council’s upcoming action plan, spanning from 2026 to 2030, which aims to address various regional health challenges. These discussions highlighted the commitment of GCC nations to work closely together on health-related matters.
A key agenda item for the health ministers was the strategic decisions concerning the storage and management of essential supplies, including food and medicines. This also extended to the health examinations required for expatriate workers, demonstrating the region’s focus on maintaining health standards and preparedness for its diverse workforce.
The meetings did not overlook the pressing issue of drug abuse, as officials discussed the Gulf Strategy for Combating Drugs, which will be implemented from 2025 to 2028. Additionally, plans to establish a Gulf Centre for Food Risk Assessment were outlined, aiming to bolster food safety measures across GCC countries.
Officials also took the opportunity to review the progress made on decisions from the previous GCC Health Ministers’ Committee meeting, ensuring that ongoing initiatives are being effectively executed. These efforts underscore the dedication of GCC nations to foster a collaborative approach to regional health challenges and solutions.
